“Love is Kind”

1 Corinthians 13:4

Are you kind? Most of the Filipino people are very kind, I know. Maybe if you are so that kind person, I think this sermon is useless. However, let’s see how God teaches us today on this topic – love is kind.

(Reading 1 Corinthians: 13 – 4 NIV)

 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

           When I was young, one singer before sang a song Love is Real... But today, love is patient and love is kind. Kindness – everybody says “I’m kind...” and then we think he is a kind person or not. Let us see what is ‘kind’. We have to have one model. If you don’t have a model, there’s no way we could understand and realize what the real kindness is meant about by the Bible. Everybody says, “You are kind...very kind of you...” If you are being served you will say, “You are very good and you are kind...”

          We have a model. What kind of a role model we have in the Bible so we will not be misfocused; we will not be disoriented? When you see Matthew 8:1-3, it says, “When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.” About the ‘kind’ in the Bible, it says, ‘Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man.’ Well, I would like to say today that this is one good model of kindness that we can see in the Bible because kindness is reaching out hand. Jesus reached out His hand to the people who are suffering from leprosy. That is one model of how we live in the life and acts of kindness and goodness.

You may say it’s very easy reaching your hands out. But consider where Jesus reached. Jesus reached out His hand to the people, to somebody who has leprosy. In those days, nobody touched that man who was suffering from leprosy. Not only touch, they never get too close to that people. Think about us, if we have something or some occasion if we have somebody that we want to reach out our hand and somebody or situation that you don’t like to reach your hands out; if you do have, you are not kind. Jesus met a woman in the City of Sychar – a very dirty woman, a Samaritan lady that the Jews never even talked to – but Jesus opened His mouth to speak with that woman. If we have somebody you don’t like to talk to, if we have some situation – because of him or because of her so you don’t like to mingle with – you are not kind. Being kind is reaching out hands.

What is reaching out hands? How you reach your hands out is that one humble idea that they are truly important. In the eyes of Jesus Christ, sinners are very important. In the eyes of Jesus Christ, the one lost sheep is so important. In the eyes of Jesus Christ, the lost son is so important. So, kindness is to be based on idea and our character is that somebody – which means not you, not him or her – among the people other than you or you may say third party; they are very important. Maybe he or she is not important to you but we have to change our heart. Everybody is important whether they are sick, whether they are small, whether they have nothing, whether they have disease. In our eyes, we can see the disease, in our eyes, we can see the limitation but the weight or value of the soul in the life is exactly the same to the Lord.

How we can reach our hands out? First, we have to know that everybody in the Lord – believers or non-believers – everyone in this universe is very important. So, you can reach just as they are. Imagine one man who was suffering because of the leprosy. Imagine how he could able to wear how he looked like. Maybe he looks like a beggar or more than the people who are sleeping in the streets. If we are talking about love, if we are talking about kind, we have to start from that point. Don’t ask who you are; don’t ask how much we have; don’t ask how big, deep or far you had education – just as they are.

There is one family of farmer who is very much poor. They have nothing in their house. They just spend day by day eating something. They have nothing but two sons in their family. After harvest, they paid back some debts and they had very little money left. They had a meeting, “My son and my wife, even we worked very hard over the summer, we have only this much of money. What do you want me to do for you? What would you like me to buy something for you?” Then the mother said, “You see, in our house we have nothing. We even have no nail to hang my cloth. We are absolutely very poor. Today, why don’t we buy a mirror? It’s been a long time ever since I got married; I have no any chance to see my face.” So they bought a mirror and they put in one corner of their house. The father looked at the mirror, smiling and did everything. The mother did also, “I was very beautiful before but now because of very hard working, I have many stars on my face.” And then the little one, their child, saw his face. He was shocked. He doesn’t know how to smile or laugh or angry. He saw himself in the mirror and looked at his parents. Then he asked his parents, “Mommy and Daddy, why my face is like this?” Actually, that little one was kicked by a donkey when he was very young and his face was like destroyed. The young one had scars and everything just like he had remodeling. And then he asked his mother, “How do you still like me, Mommy? How do you still love me, Mommy?” Mother says, “Of course, I love you not because of your face. I love you not because you are kicked by a donkey when you were very young.”

The kindness is you reach out your hand just as they are. That is how. Even this Christmas day, if you have any broken relationship between you and some of your neighbors and some other people that you decided to yourself that you’ll never reach out your hands again, I challenge you to see the word, what it says in 1 Corinthians 13 about kindness. Reaching out a hand means just as they are. When you see Luke 6:35, even Jesus said, “Love your enemies...” “He is my enemy...She is my I have good excuse that I will hate. But Bible says to love your enemies. Enemy means you made him as your enemy. Reading further, “ good to them and lend to them without expecting to get anything back...” That’s how Bible says because you said that you are all kind; this is how to evaluate yourselves: Do I love my enemies? I pray that the love and kindness comes from the Lord. Without the working of the Holy Spirit, it’s impossible. How can you love your enemies? But that is possible that is why Jesus said here, “Love your enemies.” There is one promise and I want that this reward will be yours, “Then your reward will be great...” Everybody steps, “Love your enemies!” “How can I?” No, love your enemies and do good things! Lend something to them and do not expect anything will be back to you so that the reward will be great... Furthermore, remember brothers and sisters that you will be sons of the Most High. There’s something I can verify and I can evaluate you, if you are saved and you are the son and daughter of God, do I really can see that kindness what the Bible says today is in you or not? That is automatic. “Lord, I did this. This is for you...” But then the Lord will say, “I don’t know you...” “I did it for you...” “You did it for your own business...You did it for your own sake...” It says, “You will be the sons of the Most High because God is kind to the ungrateful and wicked...” Ungrateful means, I am the ungrateful; I am the wicked. How I know? – Because I know myself. God gave me this because He is so kind in His love. I became His enemy but He loved me! Once I was lost, that was amazing grace of course so we can reach our hands through the love of God in Jesus Christ. His kindness, His mercy, in His love through Jesus Christ; you see what and how is the way we will be such a kind person.

Matthew 8:1-3 says, “Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.” Many people reach out their hands but they never actually touch. Looks like that their behavior is very kind but then when we see their heart, they never ever touch. But Jesus touched. Jesus never say, “Okay, make yourself clean!” Jesus touched Him while nobody touch him. Kindness is touching. And the kindness Bible says today is touching with your hand. Touching means action. John 13:1 says, “It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.” Where? He touched just like he touched the man with leprosy, he touched us; he touched you and me – the ungrateful and the wicked – he touched us on the cross. That is the time of the full extent of His love. Not only to index, “Okay, you do that...” Touch means take this situation; take this relation on my control, my responsibility.

Today, it’s Christmas. In Christmas, we can see the kindness, the starting point of the kindness of God because Jesus came as a star so a star is born but a star to die on the cross. A Christmas without cross is nothing. Everybody is thinking about Christmas. Do you really have a joyful heart, joy to the world? Yes. Why joy? Because I have the Christmas. Through Christmas, I have Jesus Christ who died for me. Christmas is the cross. He showed, he reached out, he shook His hands to the world and he touched us on the cross. That’s the real meaning of Christmas and kindness what the Bible says today. You said that you are very kind. Yes, I know. Let’s learn and let’s have a good model of what Bible teaches us today.

Know others. They are really great, important, so that I can reach my hands. They are very important in the sight of God that because of him, Jesus died, God Himself died for them. I we have to say that this is the “I” sentence. “You have to be kind...” but this one should be sentenced as an ‘I’ sentence, “I am kind, because I know Jesus. God loved me through Jesus Christ so I am now the person I am – kind. You have to know I am kind...anytime and any circumstances. I will reach my hands out. I will touch because I am kind.” Never or Do not expect. “I do this...maybe God give me something. I touch this, maybe I have reward...” How God says? Love your enemy and lend something to them and do not expect for the return. That’s what Jesus teaches us today. This is how to spell KIND. D is deny yourself. “Because I’m somebody...I’m a pastor...I’m blah, blah...” You’ll never be a kind enough person what Bible teaches us today. Brothers and sister, Merry Christmas! Let’s see how God made Himself so kind to us so that He is kind; we should be the person to be the real kind what Bible says.

“God Is An Ever-present Help…”

Psalm 46:1-11

(Reading Psalms 46: 1 – 34 NIV)

 1 God is our refuge and strength,
   an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
   and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
   and the mountains quake with their surging.

   4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
   the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
   God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
   he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

   7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
   the God of Jacob is our fortress.

   8 Come and see what the LORD has done,
   the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
   to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
   he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
   I will be exalted among the nations,
   I will be exalted in the earth.”

   11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
   the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Did you ever meet with God in your life? “Pastor Bang, how can we meet God?” Well, I challenge you today, we need and we have to meet with God. How? Maybe, not face to face for Bible says that if you see God, you’re no more. Also, I would like to challenge you today that you would listen to the voice of God. Maybe you ask, “How can I know that the voice was the voice of God?” Did you ever hear the voice of God before in your life? If not, you’ll never see; you’ll never meet with God; you’ll never hear the voice of the Lord; you’ll never touch; there’s nothing! How can you believe? How can you say “I love you Lord…” What made you to say ‘I love you, Lord’? Who ask you, “You believe in God?” “Pastor Bang…maybe yes but maybe not.”

Today I want to share with you about who God really is. Somebody knows, God is this…God is that…of course that’s correct. But today I would like to share with you – God is our help. Why do you need help? I need help all the time. When I cook rice, I need help. That is why I ask my wife, “Can you cook rice for me?” When I wash my clothes or laundry, I ask my wife, “Samonim, can you do this for me?” In many ways in my ministry, I ask the church leaders, “Can you do this? Could you please do this because I’m no good?” One thing I’ve been doing good is ‘nothing I can do’.

First, God is my help. Well, when do you need help? Of course when I need help, I need help! When you see verse one of Chapter 46, it says, “God is our refuge and strength…” which means ‘I will never get any other power other than God.’ When we continue verse one it says, “…an ever-present help in trouble…” It is not clear why and what is the purpose of this Psalm; sang before whom; what is the reason of this Psalm that was written? Some ideas say that this is the time of invading of Assyrian with King Hezekia. There’s no evidence but many people thinks so. Never mind; but, the Israelites have kind of great pressure because hundred of hundred thousand troops are attacking to the Israelites while the Israelites have no strong enough soldiers to protect themselves.  When Bible says in verse one, “…in trouble…” it is not the small trouble like, “I’m in trouble because I was caught in expressway for over speeding…” That is not trouble. Sometimes you say, “I don’t have enough budget… I’m in trouble!” You may say that but in the Bible, ‘in trouble’ is not such a small thing. You will see what kind of trouble this author or Psalmist experienced.

First he declared God is help in trouble which is beyond of one’s control; actually, nobody could possibly control. For example, in verse it says, “Though the earth gives way…” The earth is let’s say, the land or the foundation or what you are living for or the purpose of your life, this earth where you put your steps on. The trouble it mentioned here was the earth is giving way. And then the mountains fall just like a volcanic eruption. Maybe you have a very good villa or house on top of the mountain where you have very good temperature all the time like Baguio and you enjoyed your life. But someday, all of a sudden mountains fall. That is in trouble according to the Bible. And then, this mountain falls into the heart of sea. I want you to use your imagination. This trouble means beyond your control or expectations. Then at the same time, the sea water roar and foam. That is the trouble mentioned here. Maybe today, you have some kind of trouble beyond your control. Listen to the Bible today. “Even though, I do trust and believe in God so I declare: God is my help because my trouble is like a mountain falls just like such a great trouble I have in my life today but yet Bible says God is my ever-present help in my trouble.” God is help. Brothers and sisters, remember God is here not there. God is here in the middle of your life to be your help.

Second, he (Psalmist) sang ‘trust’ so he trusts, “I will never fear…” Mountains fall down! I will never fear. Why? When you are hit by even a small stone you say, “It hurts!” but this is big, big mountains not only one. He (Psalmist) says, “We will not fear. Not because I’m good…not because I’m educated…not because I have very good line until some part of the Philippines, we will not fear even with such great problems attacking us today.” Why? – Because he put trust and acknowledge Him. When mountains are falling down against you, you got to see who the Creator is. My Galloper car has problem always – sometimes the wheels, sometimes air-con, sometimes I don’t know the name. I went to some service shop and he said, “Pastor Bang, get this one…you buy in Korea…imported…this is an old car…” I asked, “How much?” “Maybe, five thousand…I don’t know.” he said. I was thinking because I don’t know the problem but he knows even he is not the maker and manufacturer. He knows about the car and he knows how to fix it. Brothers and sisters, mountains in your life are falling down against you. You got to see who is the creator. The author of this Psalms says, “God is the Creator of those mountains so I believe He can do things in my life.” Brothers and sisters, this really made me so blessed. Do not see the trouble itself but who handle, who can control the trouble. Let’s put our faith to whom that has the control. There’s not only one trouble. Trouble follows another trouble. Trouble makes another trouble without ceasing just like karma. But Bible says, “No fear because I see who hold the controller, who has the Mighty Hand…” So Bible says today ‘I will never get fear’. What about you?

When I’m thinking about Anna – it’s my kind of prayer list because Anna studies in the States and so far we don’t provide her tuition fee. A couple of weeks ago, the Spirit said, “He is bigger than you!” God says to me, “God is bigger than you!” “Yes, Lord...” “He is more than sufficient!” “Yes, Lord!” I’m waiting; I trust. He knows, he loves Anna more than I do because Anna is the daughter of God and not my daughter. See if there’s very small trouble, no fear. How? I want to quote from another Psalm 121, it’s very famous, it says, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from?” “Where is my help because I’m in trouble? My mountain is moving! I don’t know where I put my steps on for next second so I lift my eyes. When I see and open my window, there’s full of water because there’s such a great flooding.” Maybe sometimes when you open your window, there’s full of sand because God put you in the middle of the desert.

What is the solution for that? I lift up my eyes to the mountain because God made that one which I cannot make and nobody can make. God made that one. I want to continue to verse 2 of Psalm 121, “My help comes from the LORD,” not from him, not from her and not from your tomorrow especially if we don’t have tomorrow, right? Tomorrow is there. Who will get that tomorrow? When you go there, tomorrow is there but God is God of today. God is doing right now. God is the help today and not tomorrow. Do not put your hope in tomorrow. Today is the day of salvation so you got to know God today and not tomorrow. We don’t have tomorrow. “I will start tomorrow…” Who has tomorrow? I said before, more than seventy percent died in the bed but they went to bed every night. They supposed to wake up tomorrow morning but more than seventy percent failed to wake up from that bed. It says, ‘my help comes’ and not ‘my help will come’. Help is here because I am here. God is here. God is doing something today and not tomorrow.

When you see the Bible how God is working, there are Bible verses saying, “God will make…” Let’s see verse 4, There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,” There is a river where streams make glad; God makes the city of God glad. How? God will make His people glad, those who are living in the city of God. There is even a river but for sure that river comes from the Lord. Maybe that river, that water comes from your valley as John says living water. So, in the city of God, the people will be so glad. When? Don’t be confused when you read the Bible. They will be very glad because they have that stream. People of God will be glad when they have that streams from the Lord. God will make in verse 9, “He makes wars cease…” What kind of war in your life? I said before that the Assyrians attack with hundreds and hundreds of soldiers as if they attack with atomic weapon and you have only one spear. Assyrians are without mercy. They kill even small ones; they kill even baby. They are so cruel. That is trouble. But he says in the Bible, “God makes even this war which I cannot control. First, I don’t know…second, I don’t have…third, I don’t have any friends or companion or my ally. Nobody help me.” But he put his trust to God, “God makes this war. In my life, I don’t like this war. I want to make peace but there is still war.” That’s problem, you know. How many times you want to go right ways but how many times the winds always striking you to bring you false to go some other way around? That is war. So, Apostle Paul did is good fighting. We are always walking or living in that situation – fighting in the utmost front line in the battle line. But he says, “He even makes war cease.”

Not only here, but I want to see how this Psalmist extend his faith even, ‘to the end of the earth’ – not only the civil war, not only the local war, even God makes this war cease in all of the world. When we see how God is doing, this is how he ceases the war: He breaks the bow and shatters the spear and he burns the shields with fire.

Verse 5 says, “God is within her…” It means the city of God. ‘Her’ means country; ‘her’ means church. God will be within His people. God is within her so she will not fall when the mountains fall. She will not even fail. God will help her even in the dawn – very early morning at the time everybody sleeps. At the time, very early in the morning, help comes.

There’s one lady who came over to the prayer mountain a couple of weeks ago, I heard over the phone.  She has a big trouble in her business because she is handling a big hospital in Korea. She got almost bankrupt; she has a financial problem or crisis. She has no any chance to climb up the prayer mountain to pray. Very that day, which is the last day for her or the banker, God gave her answer – that she will serve the Lord through that hospital. That is good. She never asked help from the banker, help from somebody; but, she climbed up the mountain to pray. God is more than good. God is more than enough because He is always being with us.

Verse 7 and 11 are the same in Chapter 46, it says, “The LORD Almighty (Almighty means the king of the battle) is with us…” God Almighty or El Shaddai (which is a very funny group) in Hebrew, God Almighty is with us. What is your confession? What is your belief in trouble? Are you in trouble? Find out where God is – the God of Jacob. ‘God Almighty’ gives you the power and strength but ‘God of Jacob’ shows you the relationship as father and son. What is your position?

God says today in verse 10, “Be still, and know that I am God…” Brothers and sisters, mountains are falling down but God says ‘be still’. How and why? Mountains are falling down yet Yahweh says, “Be still, and you got to know that I am God…” Do you know that song entitled ‘Still’? This comes from Psalm 46. First, God makes…and then God will…and the last, God says to you very simple, ‘be still’ and ‘listen to the Word of God’. Do not make yourself so busy to control the situation. Come to the Lord, ask Him for the remedy. You got to know what the will of God is in the trouble because Yahweh said, “I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” Imagine we are in trouble. Mountains are falling down. We put our faith to the Lord. And God says, “Be still; listen to me because I will be exalted among the nations. Now we know how God is doing in our lives, even in the troublesome lives.

Why worry alone? Why don’t you pray? I found nobody come to the church to pray. Maybe you pray somewhere else. God is your strength. So I change today my attitude and my mind, let the worries worry itself and I will never fight this fighting alone. God is good.

“As Well…”

Luke 12:22-34

(Reading Luke 12:22 – 34 NIV)

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

   27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

   32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Beside of Jesus Christ, sometimes tens of thousands of people gather together. Just like in the church, we have many people but trust me, sometimes God wants to open His well or open His plan to such a special person like an x-file – something very special task will be given to certain people in the group. This word was delivered by Jesus Christ to His disciples and not to everybody. So today, you and me as the disciples of Jesus Christ, let’s listen to the Word of God, how Jesus said.

First, Jesus said to the disciples, “Do not worry about…” About what? As Jesus said, in following Jesus Christ… Following Jesus Christ means Jesus came to this world to save the lost. That is the very significant, very simple and very clear purpose of His life – to give His life to the lost. So, following Jesus is to win the people who lost. If you want to follow Jesus Christ, first thing is do not worry about life; what you will eat. We have many people in Korea in a seminary to follow Jesus. First thing we have to know is that, do not worry about what we will eat. In the book of program for His disciples, to be His disciples, there is no announcement or knowledge or way on how to eat. Something strange, without eating how can we sustain our life? Do you know why Jesus said ‘do not to worry about you food?’ Not only that, ‘do not worry about what you wear. Following or believing Jesus is not the way, not the shortcut to become a rich man. That is wrong if you think, “I believe in Jesus; I will be very rich.” If you want to be rich work hard. Do not wait for the money will be poured into your pocket and waving like, “Bless me!” That is not the purpose of life of Jesus Christ. So, Jesus said to His disciples, “If you don’t follow me, never mind. You just worry about what you eat, what you wear. If you want to follow me as disciples not as beggar; beggar never will be greater man than the giver. The beggar remains always the beggar. We are not beggar. We are not begging all the time – something from the Lord – so that we can fill our stomach. If you want to follow Jesus Christ, Jesus said, “Don’t worry about what you will eat…” which means you will eat anyhow. We always worry, “Oh no, no food, no bread! Tomorrow, no tuition fee…what can I do?” Don’t do that said Jesus.

I have a debt of three thousand pesos this morning. I just issued a check. A debt is a debt. But I never say, “Oh, I have no job! I have problem… My grade is this…” Brothers and sisters, Jesus said, “God knows when we follow Jesus Christ.” Let’s not the worry attack us; just let the worry worries itself. “What do I eat if I follow Jesus? I saw Jesus Christ; He is doing nothing. I never become rich because Pastor Bang said following Jesus is not the way to become a rich man. It’s better if I’ll just go some other way…” If you really want to become a really rich man, do your business in Jesus Christ. Do not say, “I follow…I live for you…” especially for the church leaders and pastors. This is the message, I told you, is to the disciples and not to everybody.

Disciples, don’t worry about the food. God gave you your life. God knows that you have life but you always worry about the food. You have God-given body but you are thinking about what clothes you have. I love my wife (as you love your wife) because she never asks me to buy any cloth. I know she knows my situation also. She never ever worries about what cloth she wears. This is not simply meant our simple cloth to make yourself more yourself so you need clothes, right? People may say, “Wow, you have very good clothes huh! Wow, you have very good shoes…” And then? Do you think the people who said so means that you are great? No. You are only the man who has great clothes. Do you think if I wear very good clothes today worth three thousand maybe, then you will say, “Pastor Bang is really a great man because he wears this…” You would say so? If Esther wear good clothes today like Cinderella’s, I would never say, “Wow, Esther is very good!” I would say Esther is good not because of the clothes she wear but because who you are.

A couple of days ago, I talked to Pastor Neri about the carpenters. Filipino likes bar counter in their house and they will have some drinks there; we just talked something about tequila. Is there anyone of you that has bar counter in their house? I don’t know why even the Christians like bar; you will make your house like a bar. You will open 24/7 and then you will serve the drinks. That’s what people are trying to do.

Disciples, the purpose of your life shall not be the food. I repeat once again, this sermon is to the disciples. If you want to really follow Jesus Christ, I want you to change your mind setting. It’s not the food and clothes which mean these food and clothes represent your desire all the day of your lives. If you want to follow Jesus Christ, if you want to do something for the Lord and His glory, Jesus said, “Change your mind setting.” “I have no food…when I have no food, how can I follow Jesus?” and then you follow. It seems like you follow Jesus saying, “I have no food…I have no food…” just like a death march from Bataan to Angeles, Pampanga. That’s how Jesus mentioned to His disciples. Don’t do that. Why? There’s a rich man in the Bible from Matthew 19. The rich man came and asked, “Jesus, how can I have eternal life?” And then Jesus said, “You do this…you do that…you follow the commandment of God…” “I did it! I did it! What else I missed?” Jesus said, “Okay, just sell your possessions and then give it to the poor.” “Oh, that is something wrong. I cannot do…” so with some kind of sadness the young man has in his heart, he left Jesus Christ. With those possessions, the young man left Jesus with the sad heart. That is one paradox. When you see the Bible, “You shall not murder.” “Yes, I never kill anyone. I’m a good man.” “You shall not commit adultery…” “Oh, never ever in my life! I never see other women. I see my wife only. When the other women are passing by, I close my eyes.” You shall not steal…You shall not give false testimony…Honor your father and mother…and love your neighbors as yourself…

Some Filipino woman (not our member) asked me, “Pastor Bang, can you lend me some money two thousand pesos…” She is not a Christian. “Okay, but I only have one thousand five hundred now.” “Can I get it so I will pay back next last day of the month for that time I have my salary.” Actually, I have hesitation because one thousand five hundred is what I have all. My wife doesn’t know that one. So I gave her one thousand five hundred and she said, “Pastor Bang I’ll pay it…it’s only twenty days from now.” “Okay…” I said. And then the time has gone and I almost forget but then I met her, “Sister, where is my money?” “Pastor Bang, you missed the day! Today is not 30; you came 5…come here next 30.” And then I asked her on the next 30, actually, May 30, “Sister, where is my money?” “Oh, I have a problem because I paid tuition fee for my children!” “So, when can you pay?” “On 15.” So I was thinking, “Its better I forget to get money from her.” Why am I telling you this? That is a kind of stealing. And then I asked her maybe next month. You know, I met her many times but she never mention anything the other days. I met her maybe everyday. She even greets me. And then I met her on the actual date, 30, in the morning, “I don’t have my salary yet but tonight…” “I have no time. I cannot stay with you until tonight. Can I come tomorrow?” “It’s up to you…” she said. That is the life.

Disciples, like this rich man you have a kind of anxiety for the wealth. “Not to be rich, but Pastor Bang, I need something to eat…” I understand. Jesus knows. God knows that we need it. When you are thinking about the food all the time and then when you are doing nothing just thinking about that thinking, that thinking captured you. “How can I get…because I have children…I have to study…I have to do blah, blah, blah…” And then you will notice that you are already away from the way where you must step on. That’s why we have to change the priority.

Not the food, not the dress… again I say to the disciples. The Bible says today from 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety…” If you really believe in Jesus Christ, cast all your anxiety on Him because Jesus cares. Jesus said, “Not the food, not the dress, not the clothes…” “I have a worry; I have anxiety…” But, Jesus said, “Don’t do that!” “So, I will never do again…” that is a real disciple. What about you?

Disciples, the pagan world runs after all such things. The pagan world is where there is no God. That pagan world runs after such things – food and cloth – which are associated with your flesh. So, what can we do without food, without clothes, can we survive or not? – Definitely not.

What is the conclusion? What is the solution? Why God said so? – Because you are always talking about the food and this pagan world. This is a modernized adultery. So Jesus said to His disciples, “Seek His kingdom…” This is a big question – how can we seek His kingdom? It’s very easy; everybody says, “Seek His kingdom, His righteousness first. How can you seek His kingdom in your life? What action, faith or daily life we have to do in order to seek the kingdom of God? I want to be more specific. Seek His kingdom and then God says, “These things…” ‘These things’ means food and clothes. That’s a change of the priority in our lives if you want to be His disciples, if you say ‘I am His disciples’. “These things will be given to you as well… Definitely, you will have it. As well means without your effort, given to you – why? – Because you are in His kingdom. In His kingdom, the food and cloth is somehow different than that of the pagan world they are taking everyday. If you still like to eat the same that the other people eat; if you like the cloth yourself which means your appearance; and, you would like to be the same like the non-believers that is how you don’t know to seek the kingdom of God. Seeking the kingdom of God means you obey and you follow His righteousness and His authority because He reigns so you put yourself under the authority of God. That is how you seek the kingdom of God.

Brothers and sisters, the kingdom of God, His righteousness, and His reign because through Jesus Christ, God manifested His kingdom. So if you really follow Jesus Christ, you will have it all as well but more special which is separate from the pagan world, which is we have to have for the disciples of God. We eat not the food the people eat. We cloth not the cloth the ordinary people clothe. That is the righteousness of God.

“Who Touched Me?”

Luke 8:40-48

We may see many figures in the Bible – men or women. Some men are great history of Israel. Also many people without name can be easily find in the Bible. Some people were described in the Bible with just the name of his or her father only. Today I want to share with you one woman who has no name but who had big trouble and struggling in her life for long time.

(Reading Luke 8:40 – 48 NIV)

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

   As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

   45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.

   When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

   46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”

   47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

Maybe you may say, “It’s me! I am struggling. It has been long, long time that I have that kind of struggling.” But in the Bible, this woman has been struggling for twelve years. You may find this message even in (book of) Matthew, here in Luke and even Mark. I just quote from Luke (it doesn’t matter from where). We just want to know how to show our faith to Jesus Christ in the time of trials, in the time of something needed. Maybe you, your friends or somebody is suffering from that kind of struggling for long time – maybe physical problem or some relational problem or other struggling that we have. The most important thing is many people might miss the struggling that which is the relationship between man and God.

In the Bible, Jesus performed certain miracles. There is a very significant purpose of that miracles Jesus has performed. It’s to reveal God Himself. Jesus gave food to the poor and hungry people. But not only that Jesus simply gave them the food but in addition, Jesus said, “I am the bread. You are eating that bread for your physical body but remember, I am the bread of life.” We say that the bread is very important because this is associated with our life. Well, that is true; however, another special bread, the only one bread that we have to have which Jesus Christ meant before. That bread is so important for your life and your spirit.

Many cases when we are living in this world, we are missing certain important purpose. We missed that target and aim or our goal to our lives because we consider those things that everybody is considering which means we have no any idea which one is more important. Everybody rushes there so we, Christians, are the same. Everybody focus on this fashion so the Christians, without any deep consideration just focus on that. When I was young, in our country (Korea), we have a very special sport which is professional boxing. All the people were crazy about to watch it. We have many world champions (I forgot the names). Remember, that time has gone. In these days in Korea, nobody watches world championship on boxing. I know we have such a great hero boxer, Manny Pacquiao. He is really good. I don’t blame him; he’s good. But for you, Christians, to see that boxing as a sport; I know he represents for your desire to fight against your enemy and relatively you have such a great move, seems like you fought and you won against your enemy. Do we really think about our self that we are good enough to fight the spiritual battle? Instead, are we really ready to show our lives to somebody that we are fighting against spiritual enemy?

That is how we deal in the morning or over the night when you are not working. Yesterday, it was good for me because it was raining outside. I was sitting down on the chair in my room for more than twelve hours. I was praying; I was thinking and doing many things. I don’t like to eat for we eat everyday. I don’t like to see my wife because my wife is there always. I don’t like to drink coffee anymore; there is coffee all the time. When I was sitting down, deep, deep down on myself, I was thinking about the relationship with Jesus Christ. When you have time dear brothers and sisters, what are you doing? Do you still fall into the line to lottery? Christians, I suggest and challenge you – don’t do that. “Pastor Bang, it’s a charity!” If you want to give in charity, just go to the place directly not through the lottery. In every mall, people are falling in line in the lottery. It’s not only a problem in the Philippines but in Korea as well. In life when you have time, get close to Jesus Christ. When you still can kick, it’s the time for you and me to get close to the Lord.

See this lady who I am going to share with you. She missed all the chances. She lost all the money. She had no any relationship, maybe. Nobody recognize her. Nobody call her. Nobody visit her. She spent the thousand of nights without sleeping in the darkness and fighting against her own sickness. All the people said to her, “You are guilty…You are the sinner that’s why you have that sickness…so you are not holy…so you may not come to our community because you are the problem…Please keep yourself away from us.” The Jewish people and many people followed Jesus Christ. They followed everywhere Jesus goes. This woman also followed Jesus Christ. Nobody recognize her. Many people have their own desires and purpose to follow Jesus Christ. May I ask you, what is your purpose to follow Jesus? What is your purpose to be a Christian? Why did you come to this place (church) today? That woman, among all the people, I want to see how she did.

There is one woman with no name struggling problems for twelve years. Twelve years means a very long, long time in the sickness. There is only one woman among the people followed Jesus Christ. Maybe in this place today, there is only one who poured his or her heart to the Lord. She heard about the rumor. She heard about Jesus Christ just through the wind. Some said Jesus healed the sick. “I am the sick…” Jesus fed the hungry. “I am the hungry…” Jesus satisfied some loser. “I am a loser…” That is the pouring out of the heart.

What did you think this morning while you are on the way to the church? What is your desire this very moment to have from Jesus Christ today? This woman had that desire – very special, very clear desire. She heard about Jesus Christ so she believed Jesus Christ has healed that man. Jesus Christ did performed miracles in that place so to me. She believed, “If Jesus would heal him, in the same way he would heal me as well.” That was the woman’s faith. So she moved from her place to see Jesus Christ with purpose but there is no guarantee. I do believe that the friends or relatives – if she may have – they stopped her. “No, not you; Jesus healed him but not you.” See yourself with all the hindrances even from your heart or maybe even from her heart. She could see herself, “I am guilty!” Why guilty? What she did for her sickness? – Nothing. One day she found herself that she was subject to the problem and bleeding; all of a sudden. People were thinking, “Because you did so, you have this…because you did so…because…because…” When I was young, my parents blame me, “David, I know that because of blah…blah…blah…now you have no any credit!”

Brothers and sisters, listen to the word of God. Jesus never asks you, “What is the reason that you have problem?” Just like you see the father who has two sons; and, one son got away, fly by night. Then the father was waiting every night and morning. That father was waiting, until when? – His son to come. When his son comes he never asked, “Why you did so?” Brothers and sisters, do you know why we never confess our sins? – Because you think that God is the same with your friends and even yourself. Maybe God is asking you why. Maybe I have no clue; I have no answer. Believe me, God knows your heart. God never asks, “Why you…?” God seek that way. “And then today, you brought it to me?” That’s why this woman was trembled in her heart. So her step from her house to Jesus Christ was so much delayed. Maybe because of that, thinking about that way, that that woman has been delayed for twelve years. “Not today, I’m ashamed. Maybe some time around.” But, the Bible says this is the time for salvation. Today is the day of the Lord. God is waiting for you and me – not tomorrow but this very moment.

Many people did follow Jesus Christ (even almost like Jesus Christ). They like Jesus and they want to see Jesus Christ for something so people are pushing themselves to get inside the temple – inside the church gathering together in thousands or hundred thousand and another hundred of hundred thousand. They get inside the church but this woman, herself, touched Jesus Christ. Many people in these days are inside the church maybe, who will be the same as the woman? You have no desire in your life, maybe just looking and watching the television or movie. Maybe you get inside the movie theater, pay for the ticket and then you are just sitting down watching what the movie is going on. But brothers and sisters, everything which is going on in the church is not like a movie. Do you know what is the difference sitting down in the theater and sitting down in a church? In theater, you can see somebody’s life but in the church is the time for your life. In the theater, you are just sitting down and the screen will be played but in the church, Jesus Christ himself is sitting down and you are the screen played showing your life to God. That is the difference. So, when you come to the church think about, “Today, I am the main role in our service so that I will be the living sacrifice. Unto your hands I raise my sacrifice.” That could be your purpose of service today.

Many people pushed, crashed, and maybe were suffering from their sickness; but, only one in that community, in that time, that one woman God healed. Why? – Because she touched Jesus Christ. Jesus recognized it. She touched Jesus Christ in faith. She believed that Jesus healed somebody else. She believed, “Today, He will heal my sickness as well…” because that woman has no other option which means she would only believe in Jesus. Once she believed the doctors. Once she asked somebody for help but they failed, totally failed. She experienced all kinds of bitterness. She experienced all kinds of broken relationships. Now, she had only one hope. She put that last but not the least hope into Jesus Christ by touching his garment. “Jesus, it’s only you; know my heart. Jesus, it’s only you today that heal my problem. Jesus, it’s only you that listen to my prayer.” What about you? You never pray so you never know how Jesus prayed. Many people are praying, asking and want something and they followed Jesus Christ, such a great crowd followed Him but one lady was healed. How many people touched Jesus? How many pushed Jesus? Many people even touched Jesus by themselves. What is the difference? Many people get inside the church into the worship service but there will be the differences as well. Let’s learn how we live.

First, she was humble. Actually, according to (book of) Mark, she was afraid. She said to herself, “I’m not worthy, I know but it’s the only way I have – only Jesus Christ – so I come to you.” And then she believed. She never followed any fashion. She never followed any trend. She never followed something. She never followed a pastor. She never followed any program. She never followed anything but Jesus. Salvation comes from the Lord. I lift my eyes, where my help comes? My help comes from the Lord who created the earth and heaven. What about you? What is your faith? What do you believe?

She touched. She listened. She heard about Jesus Christ and she knew her problem. She had the desire that Jesus would help her and eventually she would stop before Jesus Christ and reach His hand. Many people stop at this stage but she touched the garment of Jesus. Many Christians failed touching Him. For many Christians think about shame in touching Jesus Christ. Touching Jesus means humble himself down. Touching Jesus means standing with Him together. Touching Jesus means following Jesus wherever He goes. Touching Jesus means open our hearts to show that we love and how much we do. Many people fail what about you today? Jesus healed. If she would not be healed, all the desires, all the prayers and all the get in touch are useless. What is your desire in the Lord today? Get it from the Lord. If not, your time and efforts are really very sorry and wasted. Why are you standing? Other people are together around you. They just follow Jesus. Jesus showed His mercy everytime for all. This is a blessing for everybody. But when you have desire, “I don’t like to hear; I don’t like to have this very common grace. I want certain and special power from the Lord…” If you would like to have that power from the Lord, touch Him, desire in faith and experience it. That is how Bible teaches us today. Do not be like a watchman, like audiences – you just see and listen. But be main player or main role that you want all for the glory of the Lord.

Throughout her life, not her name maybe; throughout your life and my life, not your name or my name will be revealed but the miracles, wonders and grace that Jesus has shown will be mentioned generation to generations. Brothers and sisters, listen to the word of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “Your faith has healed you…” Find out what kind of faith the woman had. Not only that there is a surplus we will have from Jesus Christ – “Go in peace…” In your life and my life, let’s have the word of God saying, “Because of your faith…because of your faith…” and “Peace be with you…” in Greek, ‘Shalom’. May God bless us.
