“God Is An Ever-present Help…”
(Reading Psalms 46: 1 – 34 NIV)
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the LORD has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Did you ever meet with God in your life? “Pastor Bang, how can we meet God?” Well, I challenge you today, we need and we have to meet with God. How? Maybe, not face to face for Bible says that if you see God, you’re no more. Also, I would like to challenge you today that you would listen to the voice of God. Maybe you ask, “How can I know that the voice was the voice of God?” Did you ever hear the voice of God before in your life? If not, you’ll never see; you’ll never meet with God; you’ll never hear the voice of the Lord; you’ll never touch; there’s nothing! How can you believe? How can you say “I love you Lord…” What made you to say ‘I love you, Lord’? Who ask you, “You believe in God?” “Pastor Bang…maybe yes but maybe not.”
Today I want to share with you about who God really is. Somebody knows, God is this…God is that…of course that’s correct. But today I would like to share with you – God is our help. Why do you need help? I need help all the time. When I cook rice, I need help. That is why I ask my wife, “Can you cook rice for me?” When I wash my clothes or laundry, I ask my wife, “Samonim, can you do this for me?” In many ways in my ministry, I ask the church leaders, “Can you do this? Could you please do this because I’m no good?” One thing I’ve been doing good is ‘nothing I can do’.
First, God is my help. Well, when do you need help? Of course when I need help, I need help! When you see verse one of Chapter 46, it says, “God is our refuge and strength…” which means ‘I will never get any other power other than God.’ When we continue verse one it says, “…an ever-present help in trouble…” It is not clear why and what is the purpose of this Psalm; sang before whom; what is the reason of this Psalm that was written? Some ideas say that this is the time of invading of Assyrian with King Hezekia. There’s no evidence but many people thinks so. Never mind; but, the Israelites have kind of great pressure because hundred of hundred thousand troops are attacking to the Israelites while the Israelites have no strong enough soldiers to protect themselves. When Bible says in verse one, “…in trouble…” it is not the small trouble like, “I’m in trouble because I was caught in expressway for over speeding…” That is not trouble. Sometimes you say, “I don’t have enough budget… I’m in trouble!” You may say that but in the Bible, ‘in trouble’ is not such a small thing. You will see what kind of trouble this author or Psalmist experienced.
First he declared God is help in trouble which is beyond of one’s control; actually, nobody could possibly control. For example, in verse it says, “Though the earth gives way…” The earth is let’s say, the land or the foundation or what you are living for or the purpose of your life, this earth where you put your steps on. The trouble it mentioned here was the earth is giving way. And then the mountains fall just like a volcanic eruption. Maybe you have a very good villa or house on top of the mountain where you have very good temperature all the time like Baguio and you enjoyed your life. But someday, all of a sudden mountains fall. That is in trouble according to the Bible. And then, this mountain falls into the heart of sea. I want you to use your imagination. This trouble means beyond your control or expectations. Then at the same time, the sea water roar and foam. That is the trouble mentioned here. Maybe today, you have some kind of trouble beyond your control. Listen to the Bible today. “Even though, I do trust and believe in God so I declare: God is my help because my trouble is like a mountain falls just like such a great trouble I have in my life today but yet Bible says God is my ever-present help in my trouble.” God is help. Brothers and sisters, remember God is here not there. God is here in the middle of your life to be your help.
Second, he (Psalmist) sang ‘trust’ so he trusts, “I will never fear…” Mountains fall down! I will never fear. Why? When you are hit by even a small stone you say, “It hurts!” but this is big, big mountains not only one. He (Psalmist) says, “We will not fear. Not because I’m good…not because I’m educated…not because I have very good line until some part of the Philippines, we will not fear even with such great problems attacking us today.” Why? – Because he put trust and acknowledge Him. When mountains are falling down against you, you got to see who the Creator is. My Galloper car has problem always – sometimes the wheels, sometimes air-con, sometimes I don’t know the name. I went to some service shop and he said, “Pastor Bang, get this one…you buy in Korea…imported…this is an old car…” I asked, “How much?” “Maybe, five thousand…I don’t know.” he said. I was thinking because I don’t know the problem but he knows even he is not the maker and manufacturer. He knows about the car and he knows how to fix it. Brothers and sisters, mountains in your life are falling down against you. You got to see who is the creator. The author of this Psalms says, “God is the Creator of those mountains so I believe He can do things in my life.” Brothers and sisters, this really made me so blessed. Do not see the trouble itself but who handle, who can control the trouble. Let’s put our faith to whom that has the control. There’s not only one trouble. Trouble follows another trouble. Trouble makes another trouble without ceasing just like karma. But Bible says, “No fear because I see who hold the controller, who has the Mighty Hand…” So Bible says today ‘I will never get fear’. What about you?
When I’m thinking about Anna – it’s my kind of prayer list because Anna studies in the States and so far we don’t provide her tuition fee. A couple of weeks ago, the Spirit said, “He is bigger than you!” God says to me, “God is bigger than you!” “Yes, Lord...” “He is more than sufficient!” “Yes, Lord!” I’m waiting; I trust. He knows, he loves Anna more than I do because Anna is the daughter of God and not my daughter. See if there’s very small trouble, no fear. How? I want to quote from another Psalm 121, it’s very famous, it says, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from?” “Where is my help because I’m in trouble? My mountain is moving! I don’t know where I put my steps on for next second so I lift my eyes. When I see and open my window, there’s full of water because there’s such a great flooding.” Maybe sometimes when you open your window, there’s full of sand because God put you in the middle of the desert.
What is the solution for that? I lift up my eyes to the mountain because God made that one which I cannot make and nobody can make. God made that one. I want to continue to verse 2 of Psalm 121, “My help comes from the LORD,” not from him, not from her and not from your tomorrow especially if we don’t have tomorrow, right? Tomorrow is there. Who will get that tomorrow? When you go there, tomorrow is there but God is God of today. God is doing right now. God is the help today and not tomorrow. Do not put your hope in tomorrow. Today is the day of salvation so you got to know God today and not tomorrow. We don’t have tomorrow. “I will start tomorrow…” Who has tomorrow? I said before, more than seventy percent died in the bed but they went to bed every night. They supposed to wake up tomorrow morning but more than seventy percent failed to wake up from that bed. It says, ‘my help comes’ and not ‘my help will come’. Help is here because I am here. God is here. God is doing something today and not tomorrow.
When you see the Bible how God is working, there are Bible verses saying, “God will make…” Let’s see verse 4, “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,” There is a river where streams make glad; God makes the city of God glad. How? God will make His people glad, those who are living in the city of God. There is even a river but for sure that river comes from the Lord. Maybe that river, that water comes from your valley as John says living water. So, in the city of God, the people will be so glad. When? Don’t be confused when you read the Bible. They will be very glad because they have that stream. People of God will be glad when they have that streams from the Lord. God will make in verse 9, “He makes wars cease…” What kind of war in your life? I said before that the Assyrians attack with hundreds and hundreds of soldiers as if they attack with atomic weapon and you have only one spear. Assyrians are without mercy. They kill even small ones; they kill even baby. They are so cruel. That is trouble. But he says in the Bible, “God makes even this war which I cannot control. First, I don’t know…second, I don’t have…third, I don’t have any friends or companion or my ally. Nobody help me.” But he put his trust to God, “God makes this war. In my life, I don’t like this war. I want to make peace but there is still war.” That’s problem, you know. How many times you want to go right ways but how many times the winds always striking you to bring you false to go some other way around? That is war. So, Apostle Paul did is good fighting. We are always walking or living in that situation – fighting in the utmost front line in the battle line. But he says, “He even makes war cease.”
Not only here, but I want to see how this Psalmist extend his faith even, ‘to the end of the earth’ – not only the civil war, not only the local war, even God makes this war cease in all of the world. When we see how God is doing, this is how he ceases the war: He breaks the bow and shatters the spear and he burns the shields with fire.
Verse 5 says, “God is within her…” It means the city of God. ‘Her’ means country; ‘her’ means church. God will be within His people. God is within her so she will not fall when the mountains fall. She will not even fail. God will help her even in the dawn – very early morning at the time everybody sleeps. At the time, very early in the morning, help comes.
There’s one lady who came over to the prayer mountain a couple of weeks ago, I heard over the phone. She has a big trouble in her business because she is handling a big hospital in Korea. She got almost bankrupt; she has a financial problem or crisis. She has no any chance to climb up the prayer mountain to pray. Very that day, which is the last day for her or the banker, God gave her answer – that she will serve the Lord through that hospital. That is good. She never asked help from the banker, help from somebody; but, she climbed up the mountain to pray. God is more than good. God is more than enough because He is always being with us.
Verse 7 and 11 are the same in Chapter 46, it says, “The LORD Almighty (Almighty means the king of the battle) is with us…” God Almighty or El Shaddai (which is a very funny group) in Hebrew, God Almighty is with us. What is your confession? What is your belief in trouble? Are you in trouble? Find out where God is – the God of Jacob. ‘God Almighty’ gives you the power and strength but ‘God of Jacob’ shows you the relationship as father and son. What is your position?
God says today in verse 10, “Be still, and know that I am God…” Brothers and sisters, mountains are falling down but God says ‘be still’. How and why? Mountains are falling down yet Yahweh says, “Be still, and you got to know that I am God…” Do you know that song entitled ‘Still’? This comes from Psalm 46. First, God makes…and then God will…and the last, God says to you very simple, ‘be still’ and ‘listen to the Word of God’. Do not make yourself so busy to control the situation. Come to the Lord, ask Him for the remedy. You got to know what the will of God is in the trouble because Yahweh said, “I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” Imagine we are in trouble. Mountains are falling down. We put our faith to the Lord. And God says, “Be still; listen to me because I will be exalted among the nations. Now we know how God is doing in our lives, even in the troublesome lives.
Why worry alone? Why don’t you pray? I found nobody come to the church to pray. Maybe you pray somewhere else. God is your strength. So I change today my attitude and my mind, let the worries worry itself and I will never fight this fighting alone. God is good.
